2 Posts in 1 Week!!

OK, I have been thinking about getting a tattoo on my left wrist. I think I'm going to do it! The thing that has been holding me back is the whole permanence of the thing. However, there is a place in Columbus, OH and Smyrna, GA that have Infinity Ink (which is removable ink). It's really cool. If I decide I don't want the tattoo anymore, or my next employer doesn't like it, one laser treatment will completely remove it. Less mess and pain than a permanent tattoo. Plus, as with most things I want to do, I have researched and found that 60-70% of people with tattoos want them removed eventually. That's a pretty high statistic, so I'm happy with my decision to use removable ink.

I have a workshop on October 3rd in Marietta, GA for the Future City Competition my Math Club is working on and that is near Atlanta which is near Smyrna so since I'm in the neighborhood, I figured what the heck.

Everyone knows I'm a nerd, so why would my tattoo prove anything different. Two years ago, some of my teacher friends and I were talking about getting educator tattoos. That gave me the idea of getting Math in Chinese or Japanese. Jason's cousin, Gabe, is fluent in both languages and is dating a girl from Japan (I think). He sent me some variations, which I will post if I can make it small enough. I'm still deciding on whether I want it to say math or something else. Tee hee.

Ready for Change

I don't have much to say lately, but at the request of Laura, I decided to update my blog... a little.

Lately, I have been feeling restless. I think I need a change. Really, I think we just need a change of scenery. We have really been missing our Ohio friends and family lately and every time we drive by the highway, Jason says don't you wish we were driving north to go home? My answer is always "yes". Especially last night when we were heading to Rum Runners to watch the OSU game instead of Columbus.

While I'm not sure we will be heading back to Ohio after Jason gets out of the AF, I do know we will be heading out of Valdosta. It's a nice place to live and southern culture is fun to learn about, but it is not OUR home.

School is going well. I am LOVING 7th grade and all the challenges it brings, which I have forgotten about over the last 2 years. My team is AWESOME (still), but I am having some issues with my partner which is bringing me down lately. I'm not so upset about my professional issues with her, but they are starting to hurt our friendship, which I miss.

Basically, I did all the work for her the last 2 years. It didn't bother me because it was work I had to do anyway and she was not trained to be a math teacher. It provided me with a new challenge and a chance to use my master's degree to teach another teacher. I never wanted the credit for the work, but it annoyed me that she took the credit. So after talking with some people about this, I have decided that I have raised her enough and I pushed her out of the nest to fly on her own. Since we are teaching new content this year, I still share my activities with her, but I don't write her lesson plans and I thought she knew the material. Well, she doesn't and she is teaching some of the things wrong. When I tell her about it she gets mad at me so I stopped worrying about her and that made her mad too. So I gave up on the whole thing since I can't win.

On a happier note (for me at least), I am taking classes to become certified to teach gifted students. My school is paying for it and I LOVE my gifted students. They bring a new kind of challenge and make my day very interesting. Jason loves to come home and ask me what new stories I have about these students. I'm pretty sure that Jason was a gifted student, but all students in private schools are placed on a gifted curriculum (although not necessarily taught using gifted methods) so they don't test for giftedness.

This year, I got some of my gifted kids to join math club and we are working on building a Future City for a competition in January. I am really excited about it especially since Jason has agreed to be our volunteer engineer for the project and he will be coming out to school from time to time to work on it with me and the kids.

Outside of school, we have just been trying to keep busy hanging out with friends when they are not busy and training for the Disney Marathon in January with a few other races thrown in along the way.

So, I guess I did have a lot to say. I know it was moistly about school, but it's pretty much all I do these days. As for my need for change - Laura and Jaime I know what you are thinking and no, I don't think a baby is the kind of change we need at this time. :-)

I want worms!!

In my garden of course. I've spent the last 3 weekends in my yard and I am LOVING it!! I even bought some pots to put on my front steps with my own concoction of foliage and flowers. I especially love my Wondering Jews. They seriously sparkle! I've got some in a pot and in water (I want to see if they grow that way - my grandma does it all the time with one of her vines). I also planted a braided hibiscus tree (in a pot). Anyway, we planted our grass today and my beans, zucchini, cucumbers, lettuce, and sun flowers have spouted! I was getting nervous.

Anyway, back to the worms. I want to make a worm bin. A friend of ours has one and her plants are growing like weeds! It will cut down on garbage and provide a good organic fertilizer for out vegetable garden. I will keep you updated on my new project. If you're interested, here are some links:

Our goal is to have no garbage only compost materials and recyclables.

I Have to Rant!

As you all know, I am not much of a blogger; however, today I have to complain. I don't watch much TV, but I HATE missing Ugly Betty and Gray's Anatomy.

In anticipation of the switch from analog to digital, we used our government issued coupon to purchase a digital antenna converter. No problem, we've had it for months and with the coupon it was only $15.

Well, since we live in the middle of nowhere, we don't get a strong enough signal to get the one and only channel I watch - along with all the others. Sure I can watch it on the computer tomorrow, but sometimes, you just want to sit in front of the TV and watch it in "real time". So, Jason e-mailed his friend to see where we can get a different device (I forget what it's called) to get basic TV.

Not watching it when it's on doesn't bother me as much as the fact that I personally know people who don't really have the money to spend on some box just to get "free" television. You see, these converters are NONREFUNDABLE! Now, all of us South Georgians are out $15! I know you're thinking what's the big deal it's only $15, (unless you are Laura :-D - Love you!) but I know people who probably gave up necessities one week just to purchase this box for their kids (my students) that doesn't work and is not refundable, and I bet they don't have cable either. I just think that's crappy!

I would write to our governor, but he's got bigger issues since he turned down the stimulus package for the entire state last week. Plus, he cut the budget for schools and is not giving teachers the money we get at the beginning of the school year to use towards classroom supplies.

New Job!!

My little brother just got his first real full time job!! He's going to be working for the county with special needs adults! I am sooo proud of him!

Google Maps

Go to maps.google.com. There is a new feature where you can take this little yellow man and put him on the map and actually see your house! Our picture was taken when we still had our bushes. You can even see Jason's car in the driveway. For whatever reason, the garbage can is in the middle of the yard, but we were pretty amazed with the picture considering how podunk our town is.

CRAZY!!!!

I know it's been a long time, but I have revived my running blog... I think it's best since I will be doing a 15K in 3 weeks. Yes, you read that correctly, 3 weeks. I am prepared to run a 5K, which was the original plan, but I'm a flexible gal and plans change. For more updates, check out my running blog.

Jovie Bowling

Jovie has a new favorite activity... BOWLING!!!! Jason likes play ruff with Jovie and she just eats it up. This went on for about 10 minutes and ended when Jason got tired of sliding her across the floor. All we need are pins... maybe next time.

I tried to put this video on Flickr, but it would not let me. Hope it works here.

In other news, I got all 4 wisdom teeth out last Tuesday (fun). I'm feeling much better now though.
